A winch is a small and light lifting device that uses a drum to wind up steel wire rope or chain to lift or pull heavy objects. It is also known as a hoist. A winch can lift or pull heavy objects vertically, horizontally or at an angle.
In construction, commonly used winches can be divided into two types: fast winches and slow winches. Fast winches are mainly used for vertical and horizontal transportation and pile driving operations. Slow winches are mainly used for structural hoisting and cold drawing of steel bars. The pulling force of commonly used electric winches is generally 10 to 100 kN.
